When the atlas and the axis (the top two bones in your neck) are out of alignment causing your head to move from the midline, your brain will make the adjustments it needs in order to keep your head in balance with the rest of your body.
All this shifting of weight is done at the cost of our muscle and joints. Uneven weight bearing causes increased stress on not only your spine, but all of your joints. The muscles on one side of your body are shortened and tightened, while the muscles on the other side get stretched and lengthened. Over time this stress will lead to neck, back and shoulder pain, as well as advanced forms of degeneration like bone spurs and fusion of the vertebrae, and even herniated discs.
By restoring and maintaining proper position of the skull, atlas and axis, you can start to correct your posture and release the torquing effect of the muscles, all while saving your poor joints. So if it’s been a while or you haven’t had your spine checked at all, it’s high time you did! Next time we’ll talk about why we focus on the atlas and axis in our advanced orthogonal adjustments!
